As such you can't really blame JB HiFi for holding off on AirPlay support when no-one seems to care whether UltraViolet lives or dies in this country.

Sony also has an Australian UltraViolet redemption service, but when you try to watch a movie you're handballed across to Flixster. It's worse if you're a Windows Phone user, as the app doesn't support UltraViolet at all in Australia. With EzyFlix gone Australians have lost their only way to stream UltraViolet movies to Google's Chromecast HDMI dongle – Flixster offers this feature but it's disabled in Australia. Not that there are many to chose from in Australia. When EzyFlix went under Australian customers lost all their so-called "download to own" movies and TV shows purchased from EzyFlix, but their UltraViolet rights survive in a separate UltraViolet locker which can be linked to another UltraViolet-compatible streaming service. You might argue that services like Netflix make UltraViolet obsolete but that's not the case when many movies are missing from Netflix and it doesn't offer offline access. The movie studios don't care – it's up to local retailers to build these apps, but retailers are already doing it hard in the streaming video wars. Unlike the US, there's no way for Australians to stream UltraViolet movies to Smart TVs, Blu-ray players, games consoles and other home entertainment devices. We're second-class citizens, with access to fewer UltraViolet movies, fewer streaming rights and fewer add-on services. There's no effort from Hollywood to streamline this negotiation process to help UltraViolet find its feet – retailers are expected to do all the hard work and take all the risks to run a service that doesn't actually put any money in their pockets.Īs a result Australians get screwed on UltraViolet just like they get screwed on other content deals.
